Why C♯ and D♭ share a fret

Understand the twelve-note cycle and the repeat at fret 12.

For this standard-tuning trainer, each octave is divided into twelve equal semitone steps. In sharp names, the sequence is C, C♯, D, D♯, E, F, F♯, G, G♯, A, A♯ and B, then C again. The fretboard moves forward through that sequence each time you move one fret toward the guitar body.

Two names, one position

C♯ means C raised by a semitone. D♭ means D lowered by a semitone. On the equal-tempered guitar model used here, they refer to the same pitch. The other paired spellings in the trainer are D♯/E♭, F♯/G♭, G♯/A♭ and A♯/B♭.

Choose a spelling for practice

The “Show flats instead of sharps” switch changes the displayed answer names. It does not change the position or pitch being tested. A musical score chooses spellings according to context, such as its key and harmony; this position drill does not try to teach all of those notation decisions at once.

Natural notes are not evenly spaced

Between most adjacent natural note names, there is an intermediate sharp or flat. E to F and B to C are only one semitone apart. That is why counting alphabetical letters is not enough to locate every fret. Learn the twelve-step sequence, including its two close natural-note pairs.

The twelfth fret repeats the letter

Twelve frets above an open string, the note name returns an octave higher. Low E at fret 12 is E again, not the same pitch as the open string. In the ideal model, its frequency doubles. The repeated note names help you connect positions farther up the neck with ones you already know.

Know the limits of the model

This version assumes standard tuning, no capo and no pitch bends. Alternate tunings change the starting note of one or more strings. A capo changes the effective open position. Set those aside while using these diagrams, then apply the same semitone reasoning to your own setup.
